Mamma Baby Cut Offs
Genderless Shorts: Men’s Standard Size 30 Waist, Small (Women’s Small to Medium, Roughly Equivalent to a Women’s 28 Waist). See Images for True Dimensions.
Production Notes:
Made from thrifted denim pants. The garment was cleaned and repaired, then shortened by hand with a razor blade. All the original tags and branding were removed before washing.
The shorts are embellished with a death metal style design, reading ‘Mammas Baby’. Each letter was drawn upon a semi complete quilt, which was sourced from a church craft sale in Hanover, Ontario. The design was cut and sewn by hand without the use of machinery, and attached to the front of the shorts with a neon polyester thread and needle. Both the thread and the needle were sourced from a deadstock inventory sale at ‘Sew N Save’ in Seaforth, Ontario, before it closed in April.
The back pocket of the shorts have a hand drawn design, created with permanent markers (borrowed from my dad’s garage) on a thrifted piece of raw canvas. The fabric was purchased from the Goodwill store in Stratford, Ontario. The marker design was heat set with an iron, it reads:
This is a singular product. Made by Chains.
From outside the system, by hand and without machinery, using post consumer materials.
To disrupt and dismantle the economy of greed, destruction of our natural world and exploitation of The People.
Created with absolute accountability—for ownership and wear that is original and radical action.
Toward the shared future of life on earth.
Both designs (front and back pocket) were attached without adhesives and sealed for durability of wear with locally sourced, organic beeswax. The beeswax was melted in a cast iron pan and applied with a paintbrush. Once dry, the beeswax was smoothed out with the heat of an iron pressed over parchment paper. The parchment paper went on to be repurposed for another project.
Care Notes:
Denim doesn’t need to be washed often (if at all), and can be refreshed by spot-cleaning with a rag and some dish soap. If you must, please wash by hand with dish soap or detergent, taking special precaution to avoid submerging the beeswax sealed designs in water. The beeswax sealed areas may be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
